📐 How It Works
Formula
Taxable = Gross - Allowance - PreTax Income Tax = Taxable × Rate SS = Gross × SS Rate Health = Gross × Health Rate Net = Gross - Income - State - SS - Health
📊 Example
US, $100K/year, single, standard deduction $14,600, 5% to 401(k):
• Taxable = $100K - $5K - $14,600 = $80,400
• Federal Tax (progressive) ≈ $13,500
• FICA: $100,000 × 7.65% = $7,650
• Take Home = $100K - $5K - $13,500 - $7,650 = $73,850 (73.9%)
❓ FAQ
What is take home pay?+
Take home pay (net pay) is what you actually receive after all deductions: federal tax, state tax, Social Security, Medicare, health insurance, and retirement contributions.
How is US federal income tax calculated?+
The US uses a progressive tax system with 7 brackets (10-37%). Your income is taxed in tiers, not all at your marginal rate. Use our calculator to see your effective rate.
What's the difference between marginal and effective tax rate?+
Marginal rate is the rate on your last dollar earned. Effective rate is your total tax divided by total income. Effective rate is always lower in progressive systems.
How much does 401(k) contribution save on taxes?+
Traditional 401(k) contributions reduce taxable income dollar-for-dollar. Contributing $10,000 at 24% marginal rate saves $2,400 in current taxes.
Which country has the lowest income tax?+
UAE has 0% income tax. Singapore maxes at 24%. However, consider total tax burden including social security and cost of living.
How do tax brackets work in progressive systems?+
Only the income within each bracket is taxed at that rate. If you move into a higher bracket, only the amount above the threshold is taxed higher.
What is FICA and how much is it?+
FICA includes Social Security (6.2% up to wage cap) and Medicare (1.45% all wages + 0.9% surtax above $200K). Self-employed pay both halves (15.3%).
How can I increase my take home pay?+
Maximize pre-tax deductions (401k, HSA), adjust W-4 withholding, use tax-advantaged accounts, and consider moving to a lower-tax state or country.
